Number of A. borelli for 40g breeder tank?

Hey guys,

I'm still pretty new to Apistos and I just picked up a 40g breeder (super cheap -$40). I'm pretty sure that I've read that male A. borelli like to be polygamous. I plan on picking some up to put my new tank eventually, but I'm wondering how many females I could/should put in with 1 male.

40 gallon breeder aquariums have a big footprint and are relatively shallow. The dimensions are as follows: 36 3/16 x 18 1/4 x 16 15/16.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. The tank is going to be heavily planted with coconut caves for the borelli.

You could probably get away with 3 or 4 females with a male with a footprint that size. Personally I would set the tank up with two females and a male, using a clearly defined territory for the female on each end. The male can take over the largest area inbetween and lapping over the females terroritory.
Even though my Borellis are relatively docile when she is on a spawn or herding the fry she keeps the male hiding. My little bright yellow monster.

Thanks, that does help. I was thinking along the lines of just getting a trio. Less crowded is usually better too crowded IMHO.

Anyone else have any input?
