I have been trying for some time now to get my trio of Biotoecus Opercularis to spawn and so far nothing. The water is R.O. filtered through peat with a ph between 5-5.5, they are being fed live mosquito larva, cyclops, daphnia and frozen bloodworm alternated every couple of days. The temp is 78 degrees and there are more than enough caves, driftwood etc. I just don't understand what I am doing wrong any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I was under the impression that they were open substrate spawners or substrate excavators, is the substrate fine enough for them to move around and dig? Try laying a piece of small clay pipe under the sand at an angle. How old are the fish? I am going off the photos in the DATZ book. I havent seen a whole lot of information on these fish, I hope you do well with them they are on my want list.

I got the from Fishfarm in Feb. and at that time they were about an inch long now the male is about two inches and the females are about and inch and a half long. I have about three quarters of an inch of play sand for substrate with pieces of flower pot partially buried in the sand. They don't seem to be at all interested in the caves. Instead they tend to hover around the tangle of wood.

Hi Chris,

>>>here<<< you find a complete keeping and breeding report written in German Language by Axel G., including wonderful pictures! If there are problems with google translations or similar tools please feel free to ask for a translation. But i'am not able to translate parts of this article earlier than in June/July.

BTW, Biotoecus opercularis "Tapajós" or Biotecus sp. "New Tapajós" like to breed in caves. ;)

Kind regards
Marc
