Heat coils under substrate for planted aquariums?

Hi,

I just read an article today that made mention of the use of heat coils in planted aquariums. I've never heard of anything like that before! Are they necessary? I'll be using a 29gal planted tank with 1/2 Flourite, 1/2 gravel with a thin sand layer on top.

If the heat coils are necessary, can I substitute a UTH (under-tank heater) similar to use in a reptile enclosure? It's basically a heating pad that sits under the glass.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!!

Thanks for your quick reply! I just went and read the article. I guess reptile heating pads are out! Well, I may just add some foam insulation underneath like they recommended. Thanks again!

nekomi,

WELCOME TO THE FORUM

Many hobbyist have used substrate heaters effectively in both plant and Dwarf Cichlid tanks, but I agree with 2la. They are not necessary.
