Can I put a pair of Apistogramma trifasciata in a 10 gallon?

I really love the look of Apistogramma trifasciata. I would like to get a pair but am not allowed to get another big aquarium (I have a 29 community, the SO thinks thats enough for now) I would like to put a pair of Apistogramma trifasciata in a 10. I have very soft water with a ph of 7.2 in an aged tank.

Any thoughts on this? Would a 10 gallon be too small? If so what would the minimum size be? They would be the only two fish in there

Thanks for all your help

KeroRocks,

WELCOME TO THE FORUM

Yes, trifasciata is a nice-looking fish, isn't it!? A 10g. tank should be fine for these guys because they are one of the smaller Apistogramma species. They can be shy and a little uppity though, so it might be a good idea to put some dithers (tetras) in there to help with both problems.
Good luck,
Neil

Great!

I hope to set up a 10 gallon soon. I will put some dither fish in there. I'm totally happy that they can handle a 10 gallon. I love the trifasciata.

Thank you so much for the welcome. :)

A 10-gallon tank will be big enough for one pair. I've seen A. trifasciata spawning in 5 1/2-gallon tanks. Use a dark sandy substrate, several small pieces of bogwood, and some plants like java fern or Aubias.nana will be helpful. Some peaceful tetra fishes will make them feel better. Good Luck!!
