melafix and nanostomus

Do you have a serious Nanostomus beckfordi infestation in your tank? are you tired of your ditter fish?, unfortunately I discovered a magic bullet to kill the Nanostomus. They were in a 10 G with a pair of A. agassizzi, the male is over agresive over anything moving in that tank, so the female and the former Nanostomus had somewhat damaged fins, so yesterday I dose the right dose of melafix to this tank, everything looks right and I went outside. 30 minutes later I returned to continue my water changes, and I found all my Nanostomus belly up; the apistos were fine, doing the wild thing... (He beats, she curves, he beats, she curves....)

pH 6.5
GH 3
50% distilled water/ 50% peat treated water
medium planted tank
25% weekly water changes

Today the apistos, snails, and plants look right...

Melafix is not a bad cure, but I think that it lowers oxygen levels. I am going to test that theory one of these days. In any case, pencils are more susceptible to rapid changes in water chemistry than other fish. Sorry to hear of your experience. When I use melafix, or any other medication for that matter, I increase aeration.

I did a little web search, and I found reported the same effect of melafix over Nanostomus beckfordi http://www.discusforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=322

anyway, the next time I'll try to be more careful with medications.
