Ben, IMHO it is the entire spawning/rearing cycle that adds stress. Females usually don't lay eggs without a male around. They just reabsorb the eggs. Living in a lower stress environment tends to increase longevity. As for fertility, I've had 4 year old apistos reproduce for me on rare occasions. The spawns were always smaller, however.
