Before beginning...

These recipes will be more effective if you use CO2 injection. If you dont, the results will be less effective but still very good.

Important data: those recipes dont have any nitrate, phosphates, wich promotes algae growth in many situations.

First , the potassium...
Dissolve 43 grams ( or 40 ml )of potassium suflate ( K2SO3 ) in 1 liter of water to make the main solution. From this mother solution, use 1 ml for every 20 liters ( 4 gallons ) of water. This gives 1 ppm of potassium. For best results, potassium concentration should always be twice the amount of nitrate in the tank. You can find this product in every places where they sell plants and trees ..

Chelated oligo-elements
Dissolve 68 grams ( or 85 ml ) of chelated oligo-elements in 1 liter of water to make the mother solution. ( I use the product brand Plant-Prood, iron 7%, manganese 2%, zinc 2%, copper 0.1%, bore 1.3% , molybdène 0.06%, wich are all chelated, so safe for fishes and plants.. ) Another very important element for plants, often not present in commercial fertilizer is magnesium. I use epsom salt, sold in every drug store ( not perfumed of course ). I add 6 teaspoon of it in the solution to add magnesium too instead of adding it separatly. From this solution, use 1 ml for every 20 liters ( 4 gallons ) once in a month, since it contains Iron...

Chelated Iron

Disolve 68 grams ( or 100 ml ) of chelated iron in 1 liter of water. ( Plant-prood also make a chelated iron product, concentration 7% ) From this solution, use 1 ml for every 20 liters ( 4 gallons ) when you need it. Since iron has a lifetime depending from a lot of things ( phospate, ph , etc ), you should add it when you need it.

Another element that is very usefull is the root growth stimulating hormone called Stim-root. It helps plants making roots faster, thus increasing their speed of adaptation to a new tank. 1 little peas for 100 liters ( 25 gallons ) when you add new plants to the tank or every 2 month or so.

The last thing you need to have a very complete fertilizer is vitamins. They are essentials and often forgotten. I use the brand Vita-chem, by boyd ( you can found it in pet-shop ). I use 1 drop for every 4 liters every 2 weeks. It's a bi expensive, but it works great. :)

You can find all these products in gardening center, except for the vita chem...

Hope this helps :)

nice info. first, since you are adding magnesium, i take it you are adding pure r/o to your tanks, right? if so, are you also dosing calcium? second, which plant prod product are you using for these 'oligo nutrients'? i am somewhat familiar with their line of fert's but was unaware they had a product with no nitrates or phosphates. usually their little bottles have the KNP ratio right there on the front.

why are you adding vitamins? i was not aware that plants require these?

i am down to abut 250 mls of tmg, and would like to try and make my own fert, but i was always thinking that the trace elements were the hard part, and expensive anyway.

I nvr dose any calcium in my tanks, and yes I add pure RO water to compansate evaporation... Since magnesium is a bit consummed by my plants, I nvr saw any impact on the Gh..

I made a mistake, chelated oligo-elements have no brand, the place where I buy my plant stuff just sell them in vrac, I mean, they must buy large quantity of this stuff and they just divide it in smaller pot. As long as it contains no nitrate nor phosphates, I guess u can take any chelated oligo elements. It's worth 10$ canadian for a little pot, wich last for decades :)

About vitamins, I can't tell you exactly, the recipe was made by a fellow aquarist based on various book and web site. it works really well, tho. I guess that there is vitamins in fish food, but it's not bad to add some more.

Hope this helps..

want to know the cheapest fertilizer I have ever heard of, and to be fair it wasn't all that bad: simple bore-water. If you know someone who lives out in the sticks, and has their own bore- get them to fill up some drums for you. It may act like sea water though (raising your pH and hardness), depending on your geographical location. But if you're smart, you'd check it anyway ;)

Do you mean well water? It has some nutrients, but not much. I have my own well 40 feet from my house, I still dose trace elements, K, P, Fe.

Australian water must be a bit different. We have virtually no Mo, but there is a fair bit of Fe and Cu. Like I said, it's a budget way of adding nutrients to your tank. And don't worry- I DO use real fertiliser, I'm not that poor.
