Hey, folks, nice forum you got here, I thought I'd give it a try. <g>
I've read on the krib about someone who set up a super dense community of apistos. (The Krib -> apistogramma and dwarves -> "What tank size (and fish density) is appropriate?" -> at the end) The guy talks about having 15 apisto agassizi in a 20ga. And he talks about someone with 150 apisto cauc. in a 55ga!
Well, I've got some apisto trifasciata (m-f-f in a 30ga) that are breeding slowly, but regularly. And I've got this 55ga that I'm just getting set up. So I'm wondering if any of you have tried housing many apistos together, and how one might have long term success with such a tank. I'm trying to grow in a lush / complex lower level of growth (stem plants, anubias, crypts) but the tank is new and that's still filling out. I got 4 clay flowerpots in there at the moment, and I thought about having way more, or covering the bottom of the tank with PVC chunks, but I'd like to have room for plants.
I'd like to work up a 20-ish fish community in this 55 from which I could select breeding pairs, sell some to the LFS, and maybe even have the odd fish manage to grow up from fry. Any thoughts on strategies to accomplish this?
