Yes I think australe, bivitattum (any of that complex), striatum, or other small-midsize Aphyosemion killifish would work OK with Apistos and/or keyholes. I would avoid the Fundulopanchax group, like gardneri -- some males can get pretty aggressive even toward cichlids.

Hi all,
I've kept Pseudepiplatys annulatus as dithers as well, and they work really well. The other advantage they have is that they need very good quality, soft, acid water and a good diet, so it makes you concentrate on water quality to keep them happy, benefitting the Apistogramma.

cheers Darrel

I think the best killis for Apistos are the Epiplatys genus some come from very acid water(bifasciatus)and the common ones are very adaptable.Aphyosemions do drift into most layers of the tank where as Epiplatys stay pretty much out of the way up top, alot of Aphyos are also quite timid, less an issue with most Epiplatys.I to have quite a few killis and Apistos and I dont have them together.I use either tetras(rummys or cardinals)or more commonly Rhadinocentus Ornatus an awesome Aussie native (pictured below)

All I can add is that killis tend to be jumpers, so keep a tight-fitting top (or at least a lot of floating plant) in the aquarium. They seem to find the smallest hole!

hmm...i don't usually fill my tank all the way to the top anyway so that might not be a problem..

Thanks for all the respond,

Might be a month or two until i save enough to order a pair.

In a 55 gallon tank I do not think that any of the smaller killie genera would pose a competition problem, event if they do spend time down in the 'apisto zone'. That being said, if what you want are dither fish that hang out above the cichlids and make then feel more comfortable, think about Aplochelichthys and Procatopus. Both genera act more like open water live bearers than killies, but they are not easy to find. You are luck that you are in WI... Jeff Michels has both genera whenever he can get them.

I would stay away from Fundulopanchax... most of them are large and efficient predators of small fish.
