Hi guys, I recently bought a pair of apistogramma baenschi inka apistogramma and when i viewed them at the display tank of the shop they were peaceful and getting along but the next day when they were in my tank the male started being aggressive towards the female like chasing and mild nipping of fins and was wondering what could be the cause of it happening is it because of the female desire to spawn? which can be seen that the female was doing tail wagging and turned yellow. The pair are relatively young abut 3cm in length and I would appreciate any tips in helping to assure me that it is a normal behavior or if not suggest any tips in helping to solve this aggression

Do you have plenty of leaf litter and hiding places? My female A. panduro chased the fella like crazy until he spawned with her when she was ready. Just relied on having lots of hiding places. They could be establishing territories.

yes I do have plenty of leave litter as well as plants my tank I would say is considered a heavily planted tank do have caves too. The male also likes to chase my dither fish provided, so I was wondering if the aggression will die down or not as I would not want the male to kill the female

A. baenschi (Inca 50) is a member of the nijsseni-group. Most species in the group are a bit 'picky' about breeding partners, so not every male will bond with just any female. Although A. baenschi tend to be less choosy than most other members of the group, your 'pair' might be the exception. As long as the female isn't being physically damaged or excessively stressed by the male, I'd just give them time and see if things improve.

I see.......their wild caught F0 so was wondering if its a natural behavior or not so far the male just chases her and other fishes around tho. Any methods to help bond these apistos? Heard of using a mirror therapy

If they aren't compatible, they aren't compatible. You could add another female. If she is acceptable to the male you will know it. They will try to kill the other female.

Hi,

just in case you happen to live in Germany (or Netherlands): I have a wildcaught female A. psammophila, you could have it for free. I have no use for it anymore.
