I have heard it come up numerous times and every time it comes up Ive heard it didnt work. People lost interest and werent being rewarded enough for their efforts. There are a few people who have line bred the species and there are some beautiful examples around.... but there at lots more bad...
I originally looked at doing this too and came to the same conclusion. To expand on Mike, all fish in have to go through a quarentine process, I believe 1 week for most fish and 2 weeks for cichlids. This has to be done at an importer with specific quarentine facilities.
There are at...
After reading the post regarding food for West African cichlids, I need to reassess what i feed all my fish. I just wanted to know for South American dwarves what is the best food types.

I just want to put a caution on my advice. Live food i had also assumed was good for pelvicachromis etc and it turns out im wrong. I think it would be better to refer to someone more knowledgable on this topic. Sorry if my information was misleading (although i had best intentions).

Thank you for the replies. This could explain more than a few things. I am taking an assumption that Nannochromis fall under the same family chromidotilapini. I didnt want to sound skeptical of you Ted, I wanted to get another opinion or a reference in regards to the info before i changed it...
I have kept Nigerian red taeniatus as have a few of my associates and we all have problems with diseases such as hole in the head, or internal diseases. Diet may be the explanation as everyone i knows feeds them meaty foods lots. I am going to change the diet of mine now. Before i change it too...
Too much live food isnt bad, as thats what id assume they'd eat in the wild. Too much of certain foods could be a problem, but what foods exactly I am unsure of. If only feed live worms about 1 in 3 or 4 feeds, I feed frozen foods 1 in 4 and flakes the other 2. I feel variety is better for them...
I fed fry that were just under 1cm live black worms. The worm was 3 or 4 cm long and the fry loved it (i only have 2). Now i feed them it when ever i feed any of them live black worms. Its something that i never get tired off watching a tiny fish wrestle with a worm.

Hi All
I have read that under certain water chemical levels eggs fish wont breed or if they do the eggs wont hatch. Im generally referring to pH and kH/gH as I understand the problems of Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate.
My question in a nutshell is.... If eggs hatch and fry make it to free...
Ok I know what they were talking about now. Does anyone know a simple way to raise and keep vinigar eels. And from the sounds of them a good way to feed the fish without messing up the water.
Thanks for the replies

I was reading Ewe Romers atlas last night and on one of the species it suggested to feed these to small fry. Stating that it was excellent for all dwarf cichlid fry. My question is what is tubatrix and how do I get them. My guess is that they are microworms.

With the peat moss method, do you put say the water your using in with peat moss and aerate the water? Fish can be frustrating but ill learn.
Thanks for the advice.

Thank you both for the replies.
To simplify what you have written, am i right in saying an increase in carbonates (measured as kH) will tend to stabilise pH by stopping reactions which lead to an increasing concentration of Hydrogen (and lowering pH). And am I also right in thinking if you...
Thanks for the interest. They ended up being bitaeniata. And then due to my second crazy pH drop are unfortunately deceased. Unfortunatly for the fish i still have lots to learn about water chemistry.
(Its been one of those weeks)

After this week, I realised I have a very basic understanding of water values. I am usually the type of person who needs to understand things to see value in them, but on the case of water chemistry I went with what i was told. I never had any water problems before so I guess in the year and...
