I realize that it's a young fish, and it's hard to tell for sure, but I'm just looking for a clue as to what it might be. The shop had it labelled as an apistogramma, but they didn't specify which. It's got a yellowish body with dark markings, there are some light blue specks near the eyes.

Thanks in advance!

I would say it is a young Apistogramma sp 'Steelblue'..The sp stands for species and the Steelblue is the common name.. this tells us that the species is not scientifically described.
In fact it is widely believed that A.sp 'Steelblue' is a man made hybrid, this does not take away from the fact that it is a good looking fish and a interesting addition to your tank. Goodluck.

The fish looks like it's <1"/25mm long. At that size it's almost impossible to tell the species. Wait for it to grow up. Ste12000 could be right. It is a regani-group species, but which of the 80+ forms is impossible to guess at this size.

Hi all,
If Mike can't I.D it, I'm certainly not going, but I think Steve is right and it's A. "Steel-blue". It's in a shop labelled as just "Apistogramma", it's the right colour and it has the prominent black caudal blotch.
cheers Darrel
