Hey...i been here a few time checking out the forum and didn't register until now.

I recently acuire 2 male (still young) triple red cockatoo cichlds. One of the bigger male tend to be a little dark half way down its body.

Now the smaller male kind of confuse me...sorry but im still new to dwarf cichlids..... I have witness the small male eye (eye lid or wat it's call that surround the pupli) turn from white to dark and back and forth. Happen when feeding time and whenever he likes it i guess.

While the big male eye seems to stay dark.

Do this Apisto cichlids have nerve that control the color changing??

Pretty weird and interesting...

Most cichlids - and that includes apistos - have the ability to modulate chromatophores in their skin. This allows them to lighten and darken color pigments, which they use as a communications device. Darkening eyes on apistos is typically an aggression signal.
