Sudden death

It happened to me that I lost my male A.sp.pebas (or similar spec.) without any obvious signs of desease.

About 2-3 days before he died he began showing symptoms of stress: He became pale in colour, was hiding behind everything (at the end close to the surface although he wasnt gaspering at all) and had a quite fast rate of breathing. I though he just got kicked his *** by mom, but wasnt really like this.

Can anybody indentify what happend here so I will be able to start remedy if this happens again.

What about parasits on the gills or NO2 poisoning.


Tank size?
Last water change?

Its a 48gal densely planted, WC biweekly about 25%. Havent measured exact parameters for a while, but should be pH ~6.8, KH~5dH, NH3=NO2=0.0

I dont think there were issues with water quality, there are other fish in the tank including the female and their fry, and they didnt show any signs.

The gills looked ok, no red or bloddy signs, so I dont think this was a case of flukes.

I am kind of clueless. :frown:

I suspect the same as Jose, but tending towards gill flukes. Your tank being heavily planted and with biweekly waterchanges, I doubt nitrates or nitrites would be an issue, but check just in case.

Now, something must have triggered the onset, whatever the actual cause of death. Take care of water temperature when changing your water. It's getting a bit cool in some areas.
