As far as I know there is no fish called sp. apache anymore. Originally the "Panduro Brothers" named this fish sp. apache. Later there has been several speceies sold under the name apache, but I think the name of the original apache is now sp. masken/masked. In addition, to complete the confusion, there has also been several more species which has been sold under this name. Try searcing for that instead !

Here are some links to the respective species:

Apistogramma sp. "Apache"

Dear Mervin,

Morten and Peter are both right! Apistogramma sp. "Apache" corresponds to the form that Koslowski refers to as A. sp. "Masken/Masked," and it has also been referred to as A. sp. "Cara pintada." A. sp. "Winkelfleck" corresponds to A. sp. "Angle-patch-1" and "Angle-patch-2."
I had occassion to run all these names by Mike Wise recently, and he graciously filled me in.

Good luck with your new acquisitions!

All the best,

Randall Kohn

Hello Randall,

I'm a little bit confused here.

The tank label says sp.Apache but from what I see.....it looks more like a "Winkelfleck".

The fish has these vertical bars, like "tiger stripes".......

Does "Apache" have these bars or stripes ???

thanks a million.

Hi Mervin,

I bought myself some of the sp. Apache or sp. Masked a month ago. They are very nice. I have some pictures on the web made at my lfs. Those pictures for sure show sp. Masked. On those pictures are none of them turning agressive, but when agressive or posing they show a pattern of four comma like lines on the lateral line.

I had difficulties sexing them, but Mike Wise sad, females have no red on the gill cover.

All the best

This is correct. It is one of the difficulties in dealing with a species that have so many AKAs:

A. sp. "Apache" = Masked, Red Mask, Painted-face, A. sp."Carapintada" (painted head), A. sp. "Masken/Masked" and probably others! I prefer A. sp. "Masken" because it was Koslowskis original designation for this species years ago.

The one that is sold as apache in Norway is the same as sp algodon. It is very easy to breed:)

A. sp. "Winkelfleck" = Angelspot, A. sp. "Tiger stripe", A. sp. "Angle-patch-1" and "Angle-patch-2" , etc. Winkelfleck is desirable here. This species is associated with A. sp. "Putumayo", or Algodon II.

The tank label says sp.Apache but from what I see.....it looks more like a "Winkelfleck".
The fish has these vertical bars, like "tiger stripes".......

Both are Eunotus group fish and, given their wide association with numerous other names, it is quite easy to imagine the import of one as the other.

Dear Mervin,

Yes, it can all be confusing, can't it? I wish the folks in the trade would stick to the same names, for a change. Some uniformity might be in order here.

Neil is right here. Apistogramma sp. "Winkelfleck" = A. sp. "Angle-patch 1" (light form from below Iquitos, Ucayali drainage) = Gary Elson's usage of A. sp. "Tiger stripes." This fish (three names, one form) is different from the fish that Koslowski calls A. sp. "Masken/Masked" (=A. sp. "Apache"). Both A. sp. "Winkelfleck" and A. sp. "Masken/Masked" have also been imported into the US as A. sp. "Cara pintada."

Mike Wise tells me that he wishes the name "Cara pintada" would disappear because its been used to designate at least two different forms.

Excuse me...my head is spinning. :? I'm going back to the "African & West African" forum where I belong. Wouldn't you like to ask a question about a lovely Benitochromis species instead? :D

Good luck with your new Apistos (whatever they are!).

All the best,

Randall Kohn
