One further question, male or female. I inherited the fish from a family member along with a number of guppies and a few tetras. Would quite like to get it a companion as it appears somewhat shy.

Leave the fish single unless you want to breed them. They don't form pairs and depending on tank size and decorations it might otherwise end lethal for the other specimen. These fish are territorial and if this one has already established his adding another one is risky business.
