Does anyone know the effects of the above mentioned product?

Obviously the product is directed against hexamita aka Hole In The Head, but is it likely that it might also work against gill worms?

Any thought and experiences are welcome.

What would you recommend as a general treatment of gill worms?

either metronidizole, fluke tabs, or flubendazole.
ive had good luck using 1/4 teaspoon of 5% flubendazole powder per 5 gallons against a variety of skin, gill, & gut parasites - including velvet on young fry. It also kills Hydra. see Charles Harrison's article on http://inkmkr.com/Fish/FlubendazoleArticle.pdf

OK. Flubendazole is basically the same as levimasole I guess, but isn't metronidazole specifically directed against anaerobic microorganisms like protozoa?

Hi Lars, I treat all my S.A. cichlids and loricarids with a combination of metronidazole and a praziquantel composite product. The prazi composite (in some places sold as Drontal Plus, by Bayer, or Canidon in Europe) is basically prescribed for dogs. It contains pyrantel pamoate and febendazole other than the prazi which makes these products a lot more effective than prazi alone.

I have used this combination for close to 15 years I think. Before the Drontal Plus formula came out I used plain metro (Flagyl/Flegyl*) + Droncit which was pure prazi.

The prazi will take care of cestodes (tapeworms) and gill and skin flukes in fish (Gyrodactillus and Dactylogyra), but will not affect many other important nematode families. That's why you need to involve other components that will help to broaden the spectrum of activity and hence be able to treat roundworms, pinworms, ringworms, etc.

The metro will help with many protozoans, including the flagellate protozoan Spironucleus vortens,, main culprit involved in HITH disease.

I always quarantine my fish and apply a deworming/deparasitation protocol for 3-4 weeks applying metro+prazi composite+temperature 86F-88F

I am also beginning to use Flubenol 15 (Flubendazole 15%) which does not require dissolution with DMSO.

Note: Here in the states Droncit, Drontal and Drontal Plus require an Rx her ein the U.S., I used it in Venezuela. I can e-mail you a contact in Europe for the Canidon (basically same as Drontal Plus). *Flegyl is the name for Flagyl in Latin America
