Dither fish?

Hi,

Can anybody please tell me what are dither fish, or what's the reason for having them in a tank.
I have never came acros this term

usually smaller non-aggressive fish that like to swim in the open. this makes shy fish feel safer as the 'assumption' is that when other fish are out there there are no predators around.
the other term you sometime see used is 'target fish'. these are actually meant, as the name implies, to be the target for the aggression of other species; they are usually quite fast fish that can escape the attacks without getting hit
