Just picked up an Apisto from a local fish store. Was labeled as Rainbow Apistogramma. Still a small juvie but was wondering if anyone had any ideas about sex or sub species?
Thanks

Impossible to tell for sure, but my guess would be A. atahualpa or something closely related. Let it settle in and grow a bit then it might be possible to tell what species and sex it is.

I agree with Frank, A. atahualpa. This is a species that is considered aggressive for an apisto. Dr. Römer jokingly called it A. sp. "Man Eater", because one would continually attack his hand when put in its tank.

That explains why he’s chasing his tank mates all the time
