Thank you for the advice Andrew. Unfortunately his condition had gotten much worse, ultimately with me finding him attached to the filter intake this morning. Therefore I felt the only option was euthanasia. In future I'll know to seek help much sooner, whenever a fish changes color like that...
Thanks for the tips - I started a new thread in the disease section as ed suggested. But I think that if there are no new suggestions and his conditon hasn't improved a little by tomorrow then I agree that euthanization is probably the only option :-(

The fish has gotten worse - no change in color (still dark) but he is now having problems swimming upright and is belly is slightly bloated. Swim bladder issue?
