    Fry eaten?

Thanks, Mike. I think indeed I must have been under feeding. I suppose I can just move the male to the other side of the tank divider. Can't really see the eggs as the spawning cave is partly hidden, but the female usually tips off when things are moving, as it were.

    Fry eaten?

I have a pair of cacatuoides that have bred a bunch of times. Since the tank they were in (heavily planted 20L) also has(had) some Emperor Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras, 2 SAE's, and 3 C.sterbai, the babies were eaten I assumed. So I put in a tank divider, giving the apisto pair half the tank...

Male Aggie can't swallow, it seems.

No signs of labored breathing or any other signs of stress in fact. He appears active, and healthy (other than the aforementioned thinning), good color, and breeding postures (dances, as it were) with his mate. And responsive to my presence near the tank too. Thanks for all the advice. It...

Male Aggie can't swallow, it seems.

His jaws don't appear to be locked open. Someone else suggested it might be gill flukes. Possible? No new fish recently introduced.... What would cause a sudden occurence of a blockage?

Male Aggie can't swallow, it seems.

My male Aggie double red, whom I have had for four months or so, and has always been robust and full bellied, has of late had trouble ingesting food. He takes food into his mouth and it either pops back out again, or comes out behind his gill plates. He is exhibiting great appetite (i.e., trying...

    Spouses

Having unpacked two tanks from storage, the current excuse is: it is a shared experience with my son, AND I have promised to leave the other tanks in storage. My pointing out the gerbils, bunnies (second go round), ducks, cat(s)... one now, has been four, and dog, all of which she brought into...

    Anyone from New England?

This is a second for Uncle Ned's. I have been frustrated up here in the the central Vt. and NH area. Thought maybe the prevalence of hard well water accounted for the leaning to rift lake cichlids that i have seen in LFS. I found Uncle Ned himself to be a really dedicated fish guy, reminded me...

Do I need RO? Dumb set up move...

Thanks, Andrew. I will rest easier. I thought that the aggies might be a bit sensitive to that high a KH. At present my only other tank is a bare-bottome 20L that I am using for quarantine, and eventually may set up. Though before we moved several years back and I had packed away the tanks...

Do I need RO? Dumb set up move...

Well having now scoured the forums and closely watched my parameters --and now that my CO2 system is up and going for awhile-- I realize that I kind of did a bone head move on tank set up. Over the two bags of Eco-Complete I impulsively added some Onyx Gravel on the surface of my substrate. I...

    Male Aggie cave hiding.

Definitely what I will do as this morning the problem was more extreme. I think that setting the bbs count can be tricky (one need only read planted tank forums to glean this) and once mine has been set it will hold steady, EXCEPT in the morning when it was turning back on, as I said before. I...

    Male Aggie cave hiding.

Guess I will chime back in here. Because the controlled output from my pH controller is plugged into a timer, and the solenoid and reactor plugged into it, CO2 only flows into the tank during the "lights on" part of the time cycle. I am now believing, having reading the previous postings...

Can we collect food for our Apistos?

So I would like to open for discussion whether anyone collects food for their apistos from their environs. This could include collecting to start keeping a food culture. Sorry if this has been covered before. I live in rural Vermont with an abundance of insects at this time of year, but lack...

    Male Aggie cave hiding.

Yes, 68ºF was a typo, I meant 78ºF. You really recommend 86ºF? Apistos like the water that warm? That seems discus territory to me. He is back out, eating heartily. The male and female were nuzzling each other lovingly now. And I have yet to see aggression towards him by any other fish. Belly...

    Male Aggie cave hiding.

Update and more feeding questions. Thanks, Linda and A-E for your responses. Here is an update and some parameters. First, to note that the male aggie would usually come out and display when I approached the tank, as the female kind of still does. This comes close to winning my wife over to my...

    Male Aggie cave hiding.

I have a pair of Apisto agassizii (double reds) for about a week and a half now. Seem happy. For awhile the male was quite conspicuous, out in front of the tank, even chasing the female. For the last couple of days he has moved into a cave and barely come out, once in the morning, and not eating...
