Water Parameters
Wheee! My test kit got here today :) (along with my Emperor 400)
My params are as follows :
gH : 29 degrees
kH : 8 degrees
pH : 8.2
nitrite/ammonia : 0 ppm
nitrate : 5 ppm
I haven't had a chance to do the tapwater yet. Do i actually have to aerate it, or can I...
Hi all! I seem to have gotten my brown algae problem under control (I haven't scrapped it all off the back yet, but it doesn't grow like mad on the front any more!), but now I'm getting splotches of green algae growing on my substrated. Normally I would just stir up the substrate and suck out...
Hi all, I'm still struggling along with my 75gal tang tank with just over 1W/G of lighting. Although they're certainly not strutting, my Val seems to be surviving... each plant seems to have one or maybe two leaves that are getting quite long, so i started pruning the deadish looking leaves...
Hi all, I'm trying to maintain a planted tanganyikan tank with little success. Even before every surface of my tank was covered with nasty brown algae, my plants were dying off. I only have ~1W/g of lighting, but this is eventually subject to change. For the meanwhile I'm going to try to...
Oh, i forgot to mention, I don't have a timer yet, but I typically turn the lights on at ~8am (sometimes as late as 11:30) and turn them off at about 9 or 10pm. If I forgot to turn them on until lunch then i'll usually leave them on later at night.
Unfortunately i seem to be better at growing algae than plants :(. I have a 75gal "show" tank (5'long, 2'tall, 1'wide) with two 40W T-12 bulbs in a shoplight fixture in the hood. It has a fine gravel substrate, and is planted with several Jungle Val and one anubius that I tied to the top of a...
Is there any disadvantage to mixing cichlids from different rift lakes? I have my heart set on shell dwellers, while my wife loves the look of the electric yellows. Most of the information I've found on the net indicates that electric yellows are rather peaceful fish, but a compatibility chart...
What sort of balance will need maintaining? Please forgive my ignorance, I'm still a newbie at this :). When I had a tank back in high school, all I managed to do with plants was kill them off... I'd like to do better this time around!
Thanks! I've heard/read that both the java fern and anubias like to grow attached to wook or rocks... how do you fertilize them in that case? Just attach a little fertilizer plug to the wood/rock with the plant?
Also, will these plants continue to do well when i finally get around to my...
Hi all, I'm starting to decorate my new tank while it cycles, and I'd like some advice on plants... I haven't gotten kH/gH tests yet, but the website for the local water comission says that our water is extremely hard, with gobs of calcium carbonate (high kH?). I've heard that some plants...
Where would be a good place to find specific malawi cichlids? My LFS has several tanks full of "assorted cichlids" one of which is labeled Malawi, but I've not seen any of the malawi guys called out by genus/species at the store.
I'm still waiting for my tank to cycle (it has sand and 6...
Thanks for the suggestions! I have been perusing various resources on the web, and I like the looks of the labidochromis, likewhise the C. afra's.
The Cichlid Recipe's compatibility chart shows them as incompatible with the shell-dwellers, which didn't make any sense to me given their...
Hello all, I'm a very recent convert to dwarf cichlids, yet I'm experiencing a slight problem : My LFS doesn't have any.
While I was originally going to try to set up an amazonian type tank, I have since discovered that the water here is as hard as a rock, and now I'm intrigued by the...
