what did they came with? other apistos or some characins/corys?
it could be a hint.
first look at the male I thought it's similar to A. sp. "Mamore" from trifasciata complex. they also had this broad lateral band, slim head and orange tail. but the caudal blotch seems different. and the female is totally different.

I wish i new but they were in a tank by themselves by the time i noticed them there were three males and the one female all three males were identicle . the two i bought were behaving like a pair hanging out on one side of the tank and keeping the two other males away. i'll try to get a better photo of the male.

Chris(wildcaught!) is correct. The female is A. sp. Pebas. The male probably is, too, but I cannot be absolutely certain based on the available photo.

Yes, it is a male Pebas. This fish does best in slightly larger tanks because the males can be fairly aggressive. They also do best in moderately soft (<5º dH) and moderately acid (~pH 6) water. Römer's atlas (vol. 2) will have a lot of good information on this species.
