Hey all,

New to apistogramma keeping and have been having some trouble sexing my apsitogramma sp. abacaxis.

I have been trying to work this out but have been having no luck, all fish have black on the ventral fins, some have spots on the caudal, and I have 2 that are the smallest that have gone almost black.

Attached are some pics in the hopes that someone with much more knowledge than me can shed some like

the first to are of the same fish, and the 3rd is one of the small black abacaxis

Welcome to the site. Sorry I'm not the one who can help with sexing your fish but I'm sure folks will start chiming in soon

Hi Kerrin, welcome to the forum. Now for your fish. You don't say how large the fish are. If over 1½"/3.5cm long, then they appear to both be females. If smaller, they are juveniles and not easily sexed.

Mike, sorry mate, totally forgot about that. The fist fish is 1 of the bigger ones and would be 3cm at absolute max, the smaller darker fish is maybe only 2-2.5 so they are all juvie/sub-adult. Is there any particular reason for the fish going so dark? is it a stress/dominance thing? What should I be on the lookout for with these guys regarding sexing?
