I know many hobbyists do not realize it, but females in most species of Apistogramma choose their mate. It is not the males. One exception is A. sp. Balzfleck/Courting-spot where the male initiates courting & breeding.

i agree! And sometimes the females must work hard to wake up the "dump" males and take notice of the girls. For me it is the greatest fun to observe the behaviour between male/female apistos. Even if the females try to activate the males to do their job like "Honey, can You please take care about these tetra over there at the cabomba?... MAN! They try to munch our kids, hurry up!" :)

Ha!

"They didn't fancy the gaudy males of the domestic strains we see on sale in the shops here..."
I just have to laugh at that line - many human females feel the same way!
