There are quite a few nice Tetras that are good choices for plant tanks and Apistogramma dithers. Pencilfish, Neons, and Cardinals are common so I was looking for something different. Hyphessobrycon Amapiaensis not only gave a splash of different color but proved to be a nice fish to observe in large schools. Spending a majority of their time in the topwater area of the tank and keeping a tight school makes for a nice display.

It might be OK for a community tank, but for a breeding set-up I always worry about putting schools of fish in them with the apisto breeders. Schools often work as teams. One will try to grab an apisto fry and the female will chase it away. While she is away from her fry the rest of the school has the opportunity to attack the undefended fry. Schooling fish might not be as dangerous in a very densely planted tank. It certainly wouldn't hurt to try them, but try the on some fry that you won't worry about losing.
