Hi all,

I purchased a pair of juvenile apistos about a month ago now. The pair were labelled as trifasciata at the store. I couldn't see a third horizontal stripe on either of the two fish when I bought them but I thought nothing of it as they were still relatively young.

Since then, the male has matured a little and has developed more colour, albeit I believe his full colours are not yet fully realised. Apologies as this will make their identification a little more difficult. The more he has grown the more I doubt he is a trifasciata.

My gut feel is they are a. eunotus orange tail, but possibly a cruzi or hoignei?

Hoping someone will be able to confirm that they aren't trifasciata and also postively ID their species.

I believe they were domestically bred and not wild caught. The female is about 2 inches and the male is only slightly larger.

I know the photos aren't perect and the pair may be too young. If so I will try to ID them again at a later time.

Thanks for your assistance.

They certainly are not A. trifasciata. They appear to be a population of A. cf. eunotus. Better photos that show the black markings on the body would help to be absolutely certain.

Thanks Mike. Not quite sure why the store even thought they were trifasciata... It feels good having some idea about what they actually are.
