Hello,

I am not familiar with this fish but someone is claiming this fish can change colors to match its environment.

Does anyone know if this is true?

THEY ARE LIKE CHAMELEONS OF THE FISH WORLD AND CHANGE COLOR AS FAST AS AN OCTOPUS TO MATCH THEIR SURROUNDINGS

Thanks

This is a new one on me. I've never seen this happen, nor heard of anyone who has. Of course, they can lighten or darken their colors somewhat to match the lighting, like most other cichlids.

All Apistos (and most other cichlids) can change color, but it's certainly not "fast as an octopus" and has little to do with "matching" their surroundings, although they'll usually stay lighter in a tank with light colored sand and darker over a dark bottom. They also change in response to cues from other fish: aggression, sexual display, fear, submission, etc. Many fish also change their pattern when sleeping.
