Tricks for removing extra julies?

I have a colony of J. ornatus and J. transcriptus (mentioned in the other thread). They were started with 6 juveniles each and kept in 25 gallon tanks (13x13x36... awesome tanks!). Like all my aquariums, they are aquascaped. Now I have a pair in each tank that are starting to produce a lot of fry, and I want to remove the extra adults without disturbing the rock work. I have been patiently trying to net them out, but that is not working. They pop back into the rocks and I then I cannot differentiate them from the breeding pairs. I do not want to mess up the rock work for fear of disturbing the breeders. Do I need to remove the other adults at all? They do not seem to be picking off fry, and if they are so what? I see at least four ages of fry in the J. ornatus tank and three in the J. transcriptus.

Rich, I assume you mean cutting off the top 1/4 of the bottle and turning it around inside the bottom 3/4 to make a funnel, right?

Also, a lift-net might work. Take a deep aquarium net with handle cut off, and tie 3 or 4 pieces of fishing line to the rim. Lay it flat on the bottom with an enticing small cave or bundle of PVC pipes on top, and leave the ends of the fishing line hanging over the rim. When fish are in cave/pipes, pull the net up. Or use the lift-net strategy with food, but a shelter of some sort will help keep them from dashing away when the net starts to move.

In a tank that size I would have 2 piles of rocks, one on each end of the tank. you would end up with 2 breeding pairs or 1 pair in one side and the other on the other pile. you then can divid the tank and remove the extras with out disturbing the breeding pair.
