Hi everyone,

I'm going to pick up Hyphessobrycon procyon in a few weeks. They're a fairly new species of characins from the Rio Juma.

Are any of you familiar with an Apistogramma or other dwarf cichlid appearing in the same area?

Thanks in advance,
Jeffrey

Rio Juma is a tributary if the Rio Aripuana, which in turn is tributary of the Madeira. So probably take a look at species from the Madeira Basin.

Thank you. Is Madeira a clear river, because Aripuana and Juma are supposedly so?

The Madeira is mostly whitewater, which means the tributaries can be white-, clear- or blackwater.
According to the article I just linked the Aripuana is clearwater.

I don't know if this article could be of any help, it shows some Apistogrammas of the Rio Madeira drainage, but you would have to check the distribution of each of the species listed to see if they are likely to occur in the Aripuana / Juma. I did find a reference somewhere to A. cf linkei and A.resticulosa from the Aripuana drainage. A. agassizii could be a safe bet...

In the description of H. Procyon a list of some syntopic species is provided, but unfortunately does not include any Apistogrammas:
"Ecological notes. The type-locality of Hyphessobrycon procyon is a clear water river 40 m wide, 0.5-2 m deep, with swift current, rocky bottom, and presenting reduced riparian vegetation, probably due to anthropogenic activities (Fig. 5). Syntopic species included Ancistrus sp. Characidium aff. zebra Eigenmann, Crenicichla pellegrini Ploeg, Eigenmannia gr. trilineata, Farlowella amazonum (Günther), Gymnotus coropinae Hoedeman, Helogenes marmoratus Günther, Hyphessobrycon sp., Leporinus maculatus Müller & Troschel, Moenkhausia comma Eigenmann, Moenkhausia collettii (Steindachner), Otocinclus mura Schaefer, Pimelodella cf. howesi, Poptella compressa (Günther), Satanoperca jurupari (Heckel) and Tatia dunni (Fowler)".

Yes, I found the source of your quote aswell. I guess it's unlikely that an Apistogramma would appear in their habitat.

Perhaps something else than Hyphessobrycon procyon then.
