Panduros vs Cacatuoides

Hi apistophiles,

I have a pair of Cactuoides successfully raising fry (they are about 2 weeks old now). A friend just gave me a pair of Panduros which I have in another tank. My question is, how different is the spawning of these two species?

I have noticed that the male Panduro is definitely more aggressive and pesky towards the female than my gentlemanly cacatuoides ever was.

What should I expect?
thanks,
vancat

PS I enjoy the forum very much.

My panduro's wouldn't spawn until I lowered the Ph to 5.9 and the EC to less than 100. They also like to have some sand, mine sifted through it all the time. I used peat treated water and RO to lower the water to those conditions.

Matt make some good suggestions for working with your new pair of Panduro. I would try and follow his suggestions, but be aware that Bissot_J also make a very good point:
...when the female spawn , the male have to take care of his body. :)
I would say that that sums up the differences between Panduro and cacatuoides and what you have to be aware of with them.

I forgot to mention that the tank floor was covered in oak leaves. Besides making the water a little more acidic, it also provided plenty of cover for those times when the panduros sometimes fierce aggression gets out of hand.

That's what I do, don't use any that have any green on them. Some people microwave them to sterilize or boil them. I don't do either, I just toss in a handful. Be sure to leave a clear area in the front to feed them in. You want them to be able to find the food easily, better for cleanup too.
