My apistogramma isn’t looking too good today and his stomach looks very large. He isn’t eating. He has been staying on the bottom. Is it a parasite? How do I treat this?

I have not had this occur before so can not talk from experience. But API General Cure is often mentioned as a treatment for internal worms or parasites.

When I quarantine I often use API Pimafix (anti fungal) and Melafix (anti bacterial) as a precaution when bring home new fish.

Thanks a lot. He isn’t will us anymore. I will get another pair but in their own 20 gallon with drift wood and leaves. Should I dose the Melafix and Pimafix right when I get them? I don’t want to stress the fish but I don’t want to spend another $40 on fish to die.

Oh sorry to hear that :(

When I bring home fish and quarantine them I usually give a treatment of Pimafix and Melafix (at the same time) as soon as I get them. Like I said its a precaution I do this with tetras, apistos, rams, what ever the fish are. I started doing this because a while back when I bough some ember tetras (which are quite small) 1 or 2 of them did not look in the best shape and it seemed to help. Now that I have the Pimafix and Melafix i figure its just a good precaution.

I think the main thing is to quarantine new fish you could either treat them straight away or observe them and see how they go and just treat as needed, although maybe not all issues are visible.

Ok thanks. I think I’ll pick those up and treat my new pair. That’s exactly what happened to me. He was fine and then I woke up one morning and he wasn’t. It was too late by then. I should I maybe dose half the recommended to reduce stress?
