Looks like Apisto. nijsseni to me.

The females black marking in the head/gill area being so "tall" and the males even dorsal fin edge.

If the male's dorsal fin had a saw tooth edge I'd almost go with sp. Zwilling (Twin) though as the female's caudel peduncal spot is so large.

Does the female ever show a large spot or other blotch on her side(s)?

A. sp. Matses is a relatively new nijsseni-group species in the hobby. It comes from the Río Galvez (Yavarí system) in eastern Peru. TomC collected this fish last October and brought them back to Europe (see: http://apisto.sites.no/page.aspx?pageid=53). Since then they have been imported commercially. In most respects, A. sp. Matses is identical to A. sp. Nijsseni-New, which was first imported from Peru in 2008.
