I think cacatuoides is the only Apisto that's been selective-bred so far into a xanthic color form with no dark markings. So yes, that probably is a cacatuoides, unless somebody has developed an all-yellow strain of another species. It can breed with any other wild or domestic cacatuoides color variety (same species) and it might interbreed with other species that are closely related to cacatuoides (probably not with an agasizzi), but it's usually better not to interbreed different species.

Its my first set of Dwarf cichlids, which I just received as a "Pair" of A. Cacatuoides "Double Reds" from my LFS. I'm not too sure if I got a Pair or two males. The obvious Male is about 3-4cm whilst the duller coloured one is about 2-2.5cm. Can anyone identify the sex pls, whould be great help!

Ted

Well the top fish is a male. The bottom one at the size it is now could be either a juvenile male or female. The problem with domestic color strains of this species is that the females develop many color characteristics that only are seen on wild males. That being said, I'd give you a better than 50/50 chance of the smaller fish being female.
