Hello! Name's Adam, wanted to join Apistogramma.com since I've fallen in love with these personable guys. I've decided to try and breed mine and hopefully start breeding others too.
Right now my Apistogramma Trifasciatas are in a 40 gallon community tank coexisting fine with everybody else. My mature adult male shows no fear of the bigger fish like my Angelfish and the Three Spot Gourami. He'll actually go to the top and feed with them! Pretty amazing considering how small he is compared to the other two.
I used to have two males (one mature, the other is still developing now), and two females. But I guess one female was harassed and died, so I only have one female left. I have another female on the way. My plan is to set up a 15 gallon tank as the breeding tank for the mature male and the female. I don't think the one on the way is mature enough yet, only 1.5 inches, but when I first got the female, she yellowed up within days of being introduced to the tank. So maybe the new female will do the same and develop early...
I've had the mature male since September and the younger female/male since February 1st.
Right now I'm figuring out ways to lower my pH from 6.6 to around 6.0, such as RO water or diluting the tap water. I have a KH and GH test kit coming very soon so I'll be better able to figure how to work with the water.
