Hi everyone! I am new to the hobby of Apisto keeping. I set up a tank for my son and after trying rams from a less than spectacular fish store. We were turned on to the cacatuoides at a specialty fish store. there weeks later we had them spawn. Both females ate their eggs, one had some wigglers before she ate them right after she moved them all. I think our family watching hers made her nervous. Now she looks like she is ready to spawn again, so question one us how often do they spawn?
As far as genetics are the similar to say leopard gecko genetics? I breed geckos and was hoping that it would be just as easy to figure out rates of the varios traits. The male is an orange flash and there is one normal female and an orange flash female.
Finally where do I get one of the white golds?
Thanks for any help

Hi all,
We do know some bits about the genetics and heritability of traits in A. cacatuoides. Dark barring on the tail is dominant over un-spotted, so it would only be if your male mates with the "normal" female (probably "the double red" morph) that you would get an F1 with a barred tail. You can certainly breed for a look you like using line breeding, this was how the "Triple Red" and "Double Orange" strains were originally created. I've selected males (as breeders) that have good fin development, a dark body colour and are large and "chunky". My latest males have less red in the fins (they are nearer to orange) than the original male, but are probably more "chequered", I've ignored both colour and chequering in my selections.

We also know that sex determination in Apistogramma is temperature dependent (a bit like Crocodilians) and 27oC, should give you about 50:50 M:F.

We have had a few threads on this in the past <http://www.apistogramma.com/forum/showthread.php?8766>.

cheers Darrel

If you go into your user profile you can add where your from so that people can easily see.. Its easier to answer questions about sourcing fish if we know where you are, i for example have some very nice white gold cacs at the moment but am in the UK..

Sorry I set everything up from my phone on lunch at work today and did not make it that far. We are in Michigan. This really started out as something that was for my son and after a little research I find that the genetics can be as interesting with these little fish as they are with my leopard geckos.

there was a whole thread about it a while back..but ya..i guess it hasn't made the transition.

The only common cacs you will find or breed is:

triple/double red, orange, sunburst...
