Can I keep A. Macmasteri and A. Borelli in a 55 gallon?

Not a good mix IMHO. Macs (and angelfish) are much more aggressive than A. borellii. With cardinals I'm guessing you don't plan to breed your apistos.

I wouldn't. I had a pair of macs in a 55 and they ran the tank, chasing off the Angelfish, a German Blue Ram I had for a while (removed it quickly!), and the tetras.

RE: dither fish, proper cover for the fry and feeding of the Cardinals should allow 50% or so of fry to survive. I've got two batches (one month apart) of A. uaupesi fry in a 33 Long growing out with Cardinals and various other characins, as well as the father (mom died shortly after second batch). Cardinals tried to get them initially, but a half-assed defense by the father meant a lot of the fry survived. It was very interesting to watch! But I wouldn't try mass-producing them like this.
