I keep 10 marble hatchets in a 32-gallon tank. When the lights are on, they're always at the surface, and even in the dark they rarely come more than a few inches down. I doubt they would even know if there were apistos in the tank!
Sorry, I have only just noticed there are 2 threads on this. Anyway, here's a pic of my hatchets. They enjoy using the frogbit for cover, but feed in the open water area. I feed golden pearls (300-500 microns), Hikari floating micro pellets, and frozen daphnia and brine shrimp which I defrost in tank water and try to put gently on the surface with a turkey baster.
I've had them a month now and they all seem to be doing well. Initially they would only feed from the surface but they're beginning to learn to take food falling through the top couple of inches of water.
I've never actually seen one of mine jump, but I took care to close off all gaps around the lid before I got them. Also, be careful of your filter intake as they are slim fish and can get sucked in to some types of strainer.
Hope that helps
