A. Agassizii Fire gold ??

I obtained a pair of what were called Fire Red 'Gold"- pictures attached.
In researching them I saw 'fire gold' and fire red' and assumed it was the same fish just with different names given by distributors and my distributor just decided to go with a combo of names.
something importer down here like to do.
Then I read an account of someone who supposedly had both 'fire red' and 'fire gold'.
So simple question- I understand the general providence of the fish, and origins from 'tefe' but are there a number of variants ? and if so can anyone tell by my photos which one I have.
cheers!

I’d have a hard time getting any further than whatever color you’d like to call it“domestic strain” agassizii.

agassizii as a “species” is a bit of a a melting pot as it is. The scales I’ve circled in your picture may imply that this domestic strain is the result of breeding one or more closely related “Agassizii like” species.2594E833-8F75-4A1B-9065-074F19E26093.jpeg

Cool!
Makes sense that this fish will continue to develop colour variants. It was just the way they seemed to be described as 2 distinct variants that raised my curiosity.
To be honest the size of the hobby in NZ is so small that even with man developed strains of fish the quality isn't going to necessarily be great, but I bought these guys because I like their look of them and they seem to breed easily in my tank and might well be a fish I can sell as a centre piece for a small community tank which makes up a huge percentage of the hobby here.

When it comes to names of domestic strains, a breeder can call them anything the want. As Apistoguy implied, this is not a naturally occurring population and definitely is not from the Rio Tefe.

yeah -cheers! for that.
I understand that it is a line bred man made strain but also understood that that line was taking from a Rio tefe variety hence my inferencing that with the term 'Providence'. My question was really more of whether people had in the case of the gentleman received the fish under 2 different names and seen a obvious and noticeable difference, or as I suspect, and you seem to be confirming, they are getting a variation in name only. Cheers!

No one really knows from where the fish used to develop this strain actually came. The closest wild population in appearance is A. cf. agassizii (BBCE) Rotrücken/Red-back from the lower Rio Tapajós near Santarem, Brazil. It is possible that this form was crossed with a domestic red agassizii to produce the Fire-red Agassizii.
