I found that Indian Almond leaves did reduce the pH for me. (Rather pricey though) I also have used red oak leaves and peat in my tanks. IMO there are benefits that go beyond what we can measure (pH). I can't give you the sceince behind it but it seems quite logical to me that certain plant...
It was Apistos that got me back into the hobby a few years ago and I was also amazed at the way the internet has changed things. There is so much information that we have easy access to now. Welcome back!
Just how how high is the nitrate?
If your holding tank has no fish(?) the nitrate must be coming from somewhere; either your tap water or the peat. What is the nitrate level out of the tap?
I'm not certain about his age but my guess is 8-12 months old. His colour is a bit washed out from the flash. The water is stained pretty dark and a flash is the only way I seem to be able to get any decent pics in this tank.

Thanks for that link. I believe I read that before some...
After using granular peat in my filter for a couple years I finally began experimenting with the real thing; 100% Canadian peat (the stuff that looks like dirt)
I've been experimenting in an empty 15 gallon tank for several weeks and now I want to start doing this on a bigger scale. After...
Great post Mike! As it happens I've been trying to sort out which apistos do better in pairs as opposed to those that tend to be more polygamus and your post has helped.
Thanks!
I had a female that began to look more and more like a male as she aged. At around 2 1/2 years old I think she could have fooled many people into thinking she was a male. She had red colouration on her caudal dorsal and anal fins and even prominent red tips on the dorsal rays. Unfortunately I...
