    P. taeniatus 'Moliwe' - Male Aggressive Toward Female

I had a pair that spawned 3 times, raised the fry together, and were very peaceful. Then after a fourth spawn, the male got very aggressive. I separated them for a while (weeks) and then put them back together in a different tank. Now they have peacefully coexisted for months, but have not...

    Corydoras pygmaeus and apisto baenschi?

The corydoras pygmaeus are settling in nicely. No problems at all. The apistos don't seem to even notice them.

    What's your favorite dither fish?

I have a scarlet badis in my 20 gallon grow out tank with apisto baenschi fry. The apisto fry and the badis are about the same size now and they do treat each other like competition. They actually treat each other like the apisto fry treat each other with some displaying and mild aggression...

    What's your favorite dither fish?

I counter this problem by using a large tank with lots of cover and a small school of cardinals. My cacatuoides have raised many fry in my 75gallon planted tank with a small school of 10-12 cardinals. That is my display tank. In my smaller breeding tanks I don't have long term dithers...

    What's your favorite dither fish?

Just looking for ideas to keep with my apistos, but I think dithers to keep with other dwarf cichlids would be interesting as well. I'll throw out a couple of my favorites: cardinal tetra ember tetra

    Corydoras pygmaeus and apisto baenschi?

I have a heavily planted 75 gallon tank currently housing a pair of apistogramma baenschi and 10 cardinal tetras. I'm thinking of adding a school of corydoras pygmaeus (the dwarf cory). The apistos will occasionally dart at the tetras, but have done no damage in the months they've been...

    Apistogramma pairs

No, not necessary. I have 3 pairs living in 3 separate tanks now.

    Ohio Cichlid Extravaganza

I was wondering if any apisto people will be there (none of the lectures are on apistos or dwarf cichlids). It won't be worth the drive for me, if there aren't a few apistos or dwarf cichlids there. Since Ohio is hard water country I'm thinking it may be mostly rift lake african cichlids.

    a. nijsseni male or female?

I recently bought 2 apisto nijsseni. One is obviously a female. The other, I'm not sure about. Tell me if you think it is male or female. Your thoughts are appreciated. All 3 photos are of the same fish. Sorry for the poor picture quality. It is as well as I could do with my...

    Have I Killed Them?

Too much light shouldn't be the problem with a single fluorescent bulb, unless the light is on for more than 10 hours. Don't leave the light on for more than about 10 hours. A longer lighting period will not make up for the low light intensity.

    Have I Killed Them?

The 3 basic components of light, CO2, and nutrients are key. Based on what you've posted with a single flourescent bulb, the limiting factor on your tank is light. The plant growth is limited because there is a small intensity of light. The plants won't take up nutrients very quickly...

    Have I Killed Them?

Algae is part of having a planted tank. But algae can be minimized if everything (light, CO2, available nutrients) is kept in balance. This is easier said than done, but working toward a balance is the best long term approach. Excel and other "short cuts" won't usually work long term. Excel...

    Vacation problem

So I'm going on vacation and I'll be gone for 6 days. I can't find anyone to feed my free swimming apisto baenschi fry (I just spotted them 2 days ago). I've thought of 2 options. 1. Leave them in the tank with parents and hope they find some food. The tank is planted with a dirt/gravel...

    German Blue Ram - HITH?

Mike, So you've had success treating fish with just water changes in the hospital tank? I've had little luck treating anything besides ich during my years of fish keeping, so I'll definitely try your approach. I have a 30 gallon that I use as a hospital tank.

    Nannacara breeding help

A funny thing happened. That pair of nannacara had a new set of eggs when I posted my last message. Well today there are a group of free swimmers with the female. They are in the softest water yet (TDS ~90). So maybe that is what they needed. Regardless, I finally have some free swimmers :)

    Nannacara breeding help

I have a pair of nannacara anomala that have spawned multiple times for me. I have moved them to several different tanks with hard to soft water. They have had a variety of other fish in the tank with them including dithers, other dwarf cichlids, and no other fish. I have kept the male with...

FT or FS: Pelvicachromis taeniatus 'Lobe' pair

Pelvicachromis Taeniatus 'Lobe' pair Since I got them at the ACA the pair has spawned twice for me in hard cincinnati tap water. First time eggs didn't hatch or were eaten. Second time the free swimmers were eaten by other fish in the tank. I will trade for a pair of apistogramma...

Next step after fish die in QT

No it is not the same fish and it is not ick. The ick was taken care of long ago. That is the one fish disease I have been able to cure. These fish were new from the LFS, 8 cardinal tetras and 5 otocinclus. I'm now down to 1 cardinal and 2 otos. The only sign of disease was the otos having...
