Plan B didn't work out I think because I deviated from my plan. Was not able to find a trifasciata so instead ended up with a borelli, an agassizii "double red" and an agassizii "fire red", all males. The "double red" harassed the "fire red" in the quarantine tank (so dividers were used) and...
Hi all
I am planning to add 3 male apistos (borellii, trifasciata, agassizii) to a planted tank all in one go so that there will not be any dominance issues to start with. To do that, I'd like to have them all in a quarantine tank at the same time (I only have one).
The quarantine tank is 61cm...
Blue Ram females also have very good colours. They are easy to sex as they have magenta coloured bellies. It seems like there is a hint of that in your photo, but you can observe this more for yourself.
Hi there, my sand substrate (pool filter sand) is turning green. The tank is in the living room, which unfortunately has too much light from the outside (but the light is diffused through screens).
I suspect it is algae, but what type? Short of relocating the tank, how can I reduce or prevent...
Hi Mike, Viejo
Thanks for your responses, from which I am deducing the fish is female.
As you can see from the picture updates below, it is colouring up nicely. However, the second picture will show that it is very plump around the tummy. Is this normal, does it have a health problem or a...
hi Awth
I'm not sure whether Bigbird knows Thomas, but he is well known in Discusforums among the local Apisto enthusiasts there.
I work with Thomas in the same company :)
Bigbird, do you mean Wildcaught Elizabethaes or Elizabethaes in general (when you talked about their availability in Sydney).
Elizabethaes have been available (from memory they cost around $140 or so each). I can't remember if they were wildcaughts or not.
Thomas has bred some, maybe you...
Hi, did the LFS tell you why they gave you levamisole? It is commonly used to treat Camallanus worms, but normally you can see multiple of these worms very obviously sticking out of the butthole!
Hope you recover from this devastation soon!
Bigbird
My apistos love sifting through the sand, taking some in the mouth and spitting them out again.
I use pool filter sand which is pure silica sand and is therefore inert. I bought mine from Clark Rubber. Nice and cheap - I think less than $20 for a 20kg bag.
The colour is very...
Hi gingerbeer - if they are indeed A. sp Masken as Mike suspects, then the male should look like mine in the picture below (bought in Sydney).
Are yours like them?
Hi Bigbird, in Australia, indian almond (catappa) grows up north in tropical climates (eg Cairns). So far, I have not found a local source yet (someone who would want to collect the fallen leaves and sell it for peanuts). You can see discussion on this in the local Discus Forums.
They are...
in such a community tank, breeding would be unsuccessful anyway, so perhaps try keeping males of different apisto groups. i think its been suggested in this forum that males-only tanks will minimise the aggressions associated with breeding... and let us know if it works, as i would like to try...
Hi Mike (Wise) - thanks for your answer as usual.
Mike (Noddy) - I've been following your move to Sydney in Discus Forums. PM'ed you about the peat moss (check your Discus Forums messages). Ordered from this company (AUD$41 for 235L bale): http://www.gardencityplastics.com/peat.htm
Cheers
Hi Mike
I got some "Pure Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss" - is this the right stuff? And do you need to boil it first to "wet it and get the air out" before putting it into the water barrel so that it is more effective or is this an unnecessary step?
Thanks
Hi Mike, a stupid question here. I have 1-inch diameter PVC pipes which I intend to use as caves. If I seal one end, eg with sand, then how does the firsh come out again? It seems too small for the fish (especially the males) to turn around, so do they reverse out?
cheers
Hi Andrew, are you Erdfressers breeding well? I had my first spawn a few days ago. Just a few eggs, and the female was super aggressive. So I decided to remove the eggs and hope she'd settle down, but even after a few days, she's still hunting down the male, who is hiding in a corner now... How...
Thanks Andrew. Since there isn't a lot of information out there about the Apistogramma sp. Erdfresser, would you happen to know what sort of water it likes, ie pH, temperature, blackwater or whitewater...
Yes, my A. sp. Maskens (both males) do look like the male in your picture. Here's a pic...
