    Rio Orinoco biotope questions

Wow Tom, thanks!! Those are GREAT photos! That one little guy looks pretty vicious. Do you know what species that is? Looks like a barracuda. Those will be helpful for my next tank!

    Rio Orinoco biotope questions

I see lots of biotope tanks with plants in them. It's my understanding from what I'm reading that the blackwater areas of the Rio Orinoco watershed are mainly free of aquatic plants. Are folks just taking artistic license, or am I missing something?? For those with planted blackwater tanks...

    My first Apistos...

Just bought a juvenile pair of A. mcmasteri “red neck” at the LFS today. Not the best pic, but they’re still getting used to their new digs. They did happily eat some bloodworms a bit ago, so they don’t seem too stressed out. It’s a community tank (46 gal), so I don’t look for them to breed...

New tank, beginning of week 3

Thanks for the info Darrel. I'm using Flourish Excel liquid on advice from the LFS guy, and it appears to be working. I'm just going to (try to) be patient and let it work. My Satellite Pro LED is at 50% intensity x 8 hours/day, so the LFS didn't recommend reducing that any more for fear of...

New tank, beginning of week 3

The beginning of week 3. 46 acrylic bow front (I got it cheap from a friend who had never put water in it - my first acrylic tank and the jury is still out). Water parameters are getting there. Had a semi-serious outbreak of black beard algae, which is currently being treated. Hoping to be...

    I'm (finally) off and running!

This is my first tank in almost 25 years. It's an acrylic 46 bow front (not my first choice, but I got it cheap from a friend who had never put water in it). Eheim classic 350 is up and running. Current USA Satellite Pro LED lights up and running. Substrate for plants in, and the beginning...

Thanks Ade - this is my first time with SA cichlids. Last tank I had was in 1998, with African cichlids (which bred like rabbits!). Just spent $xxx.xx at the LFS today, and another $xxx.xx when I got home. If you add $xxx.xx and $xxx.xx together it comes out to a lot of moolah :)

    Greetings from Tucson, Arizona USA

Hi all - My name is Butch. I'm a FW aquarist from MANY years ago, just setting up my first new tank in 25+ years. Boy, have things changed! I purchased a 46 bow front acrylic tank from a friend who bought it and never set it up. Going with a slow moving South American river scape...
