Neither the male nor female were dominant in my tanks, but they had 20 longs that have a lot of java moss and annubias nana in them. The female guards the PVS pipe where the eggs are laid and the male still hangs out in the area but never got closer than 8 - 10 inches to the opening of the...
I have to disagree with you on the sexing method. I had had quite a few breeding pairs and I have not noticed any differeance between the amount of blue on the head. A theory of mine in sexing them is the amount of blue pattern on the annal fin (male have more of a pattern but females do have...
No that is not the spawning coloration of a steel blue female apisto. The spawning color is yellow like corn.
How do you know the sexes of the fish?

Thanks Mike for the information about the collection points ....
I don't breed hybreds on purpose .... I would think that hybreds would thow a certen percentage of each original parent as well as the same as the fry. Does anyone have any genetic input on this?
Richard
I also thought that the steel blue apisto is a hybred ... however after breeding them several times all (100%) of the young looked like the parents. Also I recieved an email on Jan 4th this year giving a collection location for these fish:

Received an update from my supplier...
Actually, it is more likely a female. All 14 of my females have had that black band around the tail and the males did not. Both the males and females have the bright head colors ... but males have a lot of blue spots on the annal fin while the females have had very few.
Of course the best...
Hello,
The fry looks like it is a month old. Both parents and all tank mates can be removed (or the fry moved to a grow out tank). They can be fed baby brine shrimp and in another 6 weeks you can try crushed flake foods.

Actually I am afraid that most of the fish are females and that there are very few males. I think that because there are so many fish in the 40 gallon tank that I have to break them up so that they will start spawning.
The spawning tank is very soft water (about 36 ppm) and temp at 78 F...
This is a tank of the first spawn I they laid .... yes they all look the same. They all have that great blue pattern on thier heads (it is just to wide of a shot to see it)
Your female is either different or getting ready to spawn because she is turning yellow and lost her blue on the head
I have had a few spawnings of this apisto. see the photo of the pair a few days after spawning but less than a week. I too thought that I had only males but then the female turned yellow and spawned. The female turned blue again after a week. There were no tell tale signs of differance in...
As long as the female is not chasing the male away, he should be ok. Once the fry start to free swim in a week, she will get very aggressive against all the fish in the tank. I normally have just the pair in a spawning tank if I want to have most of the fry live. If you only want a few, then...
