    sex determination- a. cacatoides

Temp 79F, pH 7.4, at hatching point and temp 79F, pH 7.8 at free swimming stage, got 25 females and 2 males. Doesn't seem to fit Mike's prediction. What else would you consider prime factors, Neil? What about maturity of the parents? My results came from first spawn...

What to do with female fry?

Yes, well, "surely addicted" would be correct. I kept consoling the hubby that "all these little guys will eventually be worth trade credit--you know, honey, like free fish food". He bought it for a while but now he thinks it was all a ruse to get more fish.  Also have...

    males or females

This is an interesting topic to me too. With my cacs., all of the largest in the spawn are female, without doubt, unless males can assume such female coloration as to be bright yellow when excited (feeding white worms gets half the tank yellowed up!) and have the black ventral fin/lack of tail...

    HELP............My Java Fern is dying

Is it too acidic for the java fern? Though I know they do well in soft water, is the pH at this level a signficant factor?

    New to Apistos

My apistogramma cacatuoides have lived happily in 7.8 and also spawned in 7.4 pH. If you just want to keep them happy and healthy and don't care to seriously breed, then I'd look at these pretty guys as a nice option for not having to mess with water chemistry.

What to do with female fry?

Aspen, I've recently been reading about potential pH effects on sex ratio, and I presume that's why my little swimmers are mostly girls. But what I wonder is whether it's the pH at spawning, or while developing that matters most? PH at time of spawn was 7.4, (on it's way down with gradual...

What to do with female fry?

I have a spawn of 27 Apisto. Cacatuoides (triple red) growing out in which I got only 2 males. These fry are actually now sub-adults and some of the larger females are coloring up brightly at feeding time and acting like they'd like to find a nice boyfriend. Since the male which spawned this...

    males or females

Is the black edge to the ventrals a firm female-only characteristic in juvenile cacatuoides (double/triple reds)? If so, then I have maybe 5 out of 27 that are male, and they are growing significantly slower than the females. :? I've read the posts and several articles on the possible...

    algae problems

My favorite algae eater if I'm looking for really quick clean-up of hair algae is the Florida Flag Fish as Orchid already mentioned (male or female, it hasn't seemed to matter in my experience). One FFF can do quick work on an early outbreak, but in a tank your size I'd add several. They...

    Fish epilepsy??

My poor little guy died today. :( This morning his gills were extraordinarily swollen and he was breathing hard and fins fully extended to try to hold still in the water, so I did a water change to remove the meds and just had him in clear aged water with a little salt to help his gill...

    flea "bomb"...fish safe?

Skip carpet powders...useless in my experience. The single most effective thing I've found to keep fleas under control (once you get them "mostly" out of the carpet) is to use Frontline on the pets. It's the only thing that worked for my Pomeranian-flea-magnet up here in the Pacific NW where...

Who wants a piece of wood that releases lots of tannin?

I'd love it. Am I first-come? How large is it and how soon do you want to ship it? After holiday shipping rush is over would be perfect for me.

    Fish epilepsy??

I have a lovely male cacatoides in a hospital tank right now for a hole in his head. He has been in there for about 6 weeks being treated with light salt and vitamins and miconazole and was finally doing well so I had just finished a week of slowly bringing the water back to the parameters of...

    Tanins... tea or spawning elixer?

I too have found tannins to be useful, though by accident. One of my favorite tanks is a dwarf coryadora tank in which for months after adding new wood the pygmies spawned repeatedly. Tanins finally cleared, and though I had kept doing what I thought was the trigger (live foods, temperature...

    Caucatoides & Salt Bath

My lovely male cac. has developed a little white bump on the top of his head, dead center. He is a little withdrawn and cannot be induced to spawn with his flirting female (they have 3-week-old fry in the tank right now), but is still swimming around and eating and otherwise looking gorgeous...

    Hair algae on cycling aquarium

The best fish I found for eating hair algae is the Florida Flag Fish. Slurps that stuff up like crazy and is OK for a community tank, hardy enough to live in a cycling tank.

Cacatuoides spawning, what about the danio?

I like to use the inverted-plastic-bottle-top-trap method usually. It is the easiest way to catch kuhli loaches in a planted tank. But it didn't work this time since the male cac. is a glutton--he kept going in, and letting him out spooked the danio and tetras so they went into deep hiding in...

Cacatuoides spawning, what about the danio?

I am thrilled that my cacatuoides are spawning, but getting "new fish-parent" jitters. So here's my paranoia: my dithers are Black Neons and one obnoxious Zebra Danio (a feeder that survived to adulthood, so you know he's fast!). The Danio routinely herds the neons into the corners, zips in...
