    Dirt tanks and apistogramma questions.

This is good to hear, I think I'll be a little more lax when it comes to removing detritus from the tanks now. Anyone have any idea if the sand allows for there to be pockets of anaerobic bacteria that will remove nitrates? I've set up another dirted tank with thick sand layer that will probably...

    RO wastewater for African Cichlids

It would have to be a good sized tank then.

    RO wastewater for African Cichlids

Would an RO unit be able to pump the water into a tank several feet away or would there need to be some kind of pump added to this water to facilitate this? I was hoping I could get this RO wastewater into a drilled tank and then have the overflow from the tank go down the drain.

    RO wastewater for African Cichlids

I was wondering if anyone has ever had their wastewater line from their RO unit drain directly into an African Cichlid tank for continuous water changes. I've always wanted a good sized tank teeming with Africans but have never really gotten into them because of the amount of water changes I'd...

    Aspidoras sp. ID

These are very similar. Perhaps because of my poor quality video but they have the exact same markings. At least now I can say they look like a. pauciradiatus at least.

    Aspidoras sp. ID

Is it possible to send one or two somewhere to be identified or are they so similar that they would still need to know what river they are from? How much would something like that cost?

Quality is not great, taken with a camera phone. Purchased a dozen at a local store, needed some small cories to keep some fry tanks clean. Decided these were perfect. Hopefully they stay small.

    Dirt tanks and apistogramma questions.

I have a couple of low tech dirt planted tanks. One tank has fine gravel and another has coarser gravel as a cap over one and a half inches of dirt. I never siphon the gravel in these tanks when I'm doing a water change (which I've been doing more frequently since I added apistos). Nitrates are...

Generalist fish keeper looking to get better with soft water dwarf cichlids.

Understood then, no cutting corners with water changes allowed. How exactly does lowering pH with phosphoric acid work? I've heard it mentioned on the site numerous times but I had never considered lowering pH with anything other than leaves and peat moss.

Adam's 3 foot low tech planted tank (with discus)

Is that just plain sand on the bottom? Everything I've read online says that discus in planted tanks are doomed. How did they do?

I've also noticed that none of the small streams that our blackwater dwarfs come from appear to have any vegetation growing in them. Is this because very soft acidic water isn't good for growing aquatic plants? All the tanks I keep now are heavily planted tanks using the Walstad methods...

Thanks! That's exactly how I was feeling, everyone has their own opinion. I'm not necessarily trying to cheap out and cut as many corners as possible, but if 5 micron filter does a good enough job to get the softest water fish to breed, why pay extra for a 1 micron which will need more...

Generalist fish keeper looking to get better with soft water dwarf cichlids.

I've been keeping fish for as long as I can remember but have always been somewhat of a generalist. I've kept and bred various cichlids, wild livebearers, and cyprinids. I've had success with the more common apistos in the past such as hobby strains of cacatuoides, basically any fish which will...
