I successfully keep all my Apistos in 20 gallon longs with small Tetras, Pencilfish, Ottos, and wait for it Corys. I had and continue to have Apisto fry grow to sellable size in these tanks. I currently have Nijsseni and Hongsloi with large groups of fry.

I have 5 A.nijsseni (2 males) in a 20 long along with Corys, Cardinals, and a couple of Ottos. This set up works because it’s full of sight blocking plants, a large piece of driftwood and the nijsseni females have their own caves.
Like I said before experiences differ. I think it comes down to how good the parents are at protecting their fry and how well feed the tank mates are. Hungry fish will look to eat anything they can fit in their mouths. Correct me if I’m wrong but don’t Apistogramma and Tetras inhabit the same...
Have you thought about a 20 long? It’s the same footprint as a 29 so that length gives you options for creating visual barriers between territories. For dithers Cardinals, Neons, Rummynose, Emperors. & Pencilfish have all worked in my tanks.
