I know that someone will eventually ask this, so I will go ahead. Did you quarantine your apistos before adding them to the tank? Running some anti parasitics and observing general health for new stock is important. Have your other fish been sick before in the main tank?
As Darrel metioned, I used a bottle trap with live baby brine shrimp inside for some cases. I also used a 1/2'' siphon hose in some situations to siphon them out into a bucket with water in it already. Also a turkey baster with a wide spout also worked very well.
Don't worry about hijacking my thread. I like hearing people's thoughts on things. BTW, I got rid of all the Rotala and added branches, botanicals, and some more sand to round out the Amazon biotope vibe. I'm shooting for the look of the Rio Ucayali shoreline, but it's not the Clearwater-est...
No problem r.
When I want to look for specific plants from a particular region, I use the Tropica website and search for plants there. You can search by 'origin' and it makes looking for specific regional plants easier...
Darrel is right! It's Rotala Rotundifolia, and it grows like a weed in my tank, lol. I'm trimming this plant by half at least once every 2 weeks. It's a root feeder, but I have the trimmings growing as a floater in several of my other tanks.
No problem buddy!
We all learn someway or another how to raise those cute little apisto fry :) (even the momma is learning how!).
Keep asking questions on this forum, everyone is very friendly here! No one starts as a pro breeder, well maybe everyone except Mike Wise :).
(here is the setup I...
Live BBS is going to increase the survival rate of the fry. I also agree with Mike Wise about microworms being a good temporary substitute in the beginning. But in the long term, BBS is MUCH better for them nutritionally. I would definitely not move the mother away from the fry. Apisto female's...
What are you feeding the fry when they are free swimming and what kind of filter are you using?
You can leave the fry with the mother for a long time if the male is not in the tank with her (like 3 months?). A hang on filter/canister filter will kill your fry if they get sucked up into it...
You can try sifting it with a fish net. It should catch the larger pieces and let the small ones fall through. Though it might take a while. Or maybe get a stainless steel colander that you use for food and try it that way. I've had great success with the caribsea super naturals sand, but I got...
I completely agree with you about the sand being necessary. I remember reading on this website a while back about sand being a 'Tooth Brush' for the Apistogramma, cleaning their gills and what not.
Another interesting fact: I read on some research papers that the larger Geophagus species have...
Thanks for answering my question!
I'm going to keep the breeder box unchanged for now. I think you are right that there is plenty of microfauna for the fry to feed on in between live BBS feedings.
On another note, the female decided to show her new batch of fry how awesome the sand is :)...
Should I be feeding her more often now or the same as before? I've been feeding her home cultured california blackworms/dero worms/cyclops, frozen baby brine, and Hikari micro pellets. She won't eat flake or freeze dried bloodworms.
