Thank you very much! Except for the latest batch (which I had turned the heat up) all were sexed as adults. Another month or so and I should know if my last attempt with a higher temp worked. Appreciate it!
I have had several batches of fry that when mature are about a 6:1 female to male ratio. I read somewhere once that water parameters influence that ratio, but I cannot recall what those parameters were. My water is soft, with a ph around 6.5 and temps around 78. Can anyone advise what the...
That’s the weird thing. She doesn’t bother him at all. He just decided to take up residence there. She hangs out at other side of tank like always. Water parameters are fine and stable.
I have a pair of young macmasteris that I’ve had for a month. They have hung closely with each other and are very active and healthy and not shy at all. The last few days I have noticed that the male has been hiding out in a cave at the other side of the tank. No noticeable aggression at all...
I’m going to second (or third, or fourth, or fifth) borellii. Have my pair in a 15 gallon, although it is a little larger footprint. I also concur with Mike’s suggestion of being prepared to move the male out.
Be careful when wiping because pieces/buds will break off, which is how they multiply. If you just have big fish, they are not a problem. If you have small fish, fry, or shrimp, the hydra will prey on them. The best/safest way that I’ve gotten rid of them is with Planaria Zero. It’s plant...
My borelli fry have went back and forth between mom and dad. Started with her then about half went to dad, then some went back to mom. Now he has about 45 and she 5. I never know what I’m going to see when I go down to look at them! They both stay in their separate corners.
I have a mixture of water lettuce, frog bit, and my planted anacharis has started to arch across the topic. The roots and cover have been beneficial, since my apistos have been much more visible around them.
I have discovered hydra in my apisto tank that has a pair of borellii opals that appear to have spawned - female is guarding the cave. Given that I can’t manually remove the hydra because of where it’s located, I’m thinking my best bet is Planaria Zero as described at...
Thank you. I feel much better about things now. I left the lights off for an extended period and today she has turned a brighter yellow, is hanging out under a rock, and seems to be the one “in charge” now.
All good signs!
After 2 weeks the male borellii has gone into full spawning mode with a somewhat smaller/younger female. He is aggressive, but not too much actual contact. She runs off and hides in the tight space behind the heater, while he darts around aggressively looking for her. She seems stressed...
