I love the vivid colors of wild caught Mikrogeophagus ramirezi, and may be able to get some. My concern is that I'm a beginner to cichlids. Which would be better to begin with, wild or tank raised rams?

both are good. Wild caught Ram won't be weaker than the tank-bred ones
when they come from reputable dealers. It is quite a common observation that wild-caught Ram is, in many cases, even stronger than tank-bred Ram when faced with some diseases.
